Alexa Powell has always been waiting for something out of the ordinary to happen. She has always felt out of place and is in search of some deeper meaning to her life. When it finally arrives, it isn’t exactly what she is expecting. Alexa is alone, dangerous and needs to seek help fast.
In her search for some guidance Alexa meets a young Wiccan, River, who is blessed with the gift of foresight. River had foreseen Alexa’s visit, having a vision of a girl with the ability to create and control fire. She explains to Alexa that there are only three others like her in the world. No one knows the identity of these people but each of them has power over one of the four elements earth, air, fire and water. Together these four people are known as the Guardians and have the ability to both create and control their own element.
With help and guidance from River and the rest of her Wiccan coven, Alexa must locate the three remaining Guardians and together they must stop a great evil that is threatening the world.

This book was brilliant. Wait. This book was brilliant. I'm sensing a bit of de ja vous. That being said there isn't anything that I can say about this novel other than I loved it. The characters didn't piss me over. The plot flowed nicely. There was just so much to love about this book.[Read more...]
Alexa. Great. Rose to the challenge very well-rounded character. Faces her new world head on. I'll admit i was a teeny bit put out by the cliché friend not believing in magic, convincing you it's all in your head, blah blah blah. Thankfully the author quashed that real fast by having the friend on board in a matter of pages. The whole i don't believe in that stuff is so overdone I just would've really sunk this book down in approval based on that fact alone. The absence of being stubborn and rejecting her abilities also made this a very nice read. To often authors take the stubborn 'no I don't want to save the world' route. It annoys me. You don't have to like the positions that you're in but that shouldn't stop you from doing what you know you must. So that was another good thing about this book. And It's refreshing to read a book where the characters admit sometimes they have no clue what they are doing but don't harp over it. Fear and all she went forward as did the others and it left room to really focus on the character and the obstacles by removing all that other stuff fantasy books are swimming in.
River. I love her. She definitely keeps things moving forward. Gifted with sight and has an uncany ability to be positive in the most confusing and annoying circumstances. Our heroes would be a hot mess without her and she better live through all four books. There are four artifacts to find so I'm assuming there will be four books. Judging on the amount of page time it took to get the first one I'm betting it will probably be three. And I love trilogies!
Scott Shaun and Rebecca. Also well written. I'll admit a little bit more depth could've been used for Shaun, but there was enough there to clearly identify him as a character, which is enough. How they all interact with each other feels real. How all the characters relate feels real and most importantly appropriate. The guardians, meet, even if reluctantly, go forward, and there is none of that annoying messing around, "no i don't want to do this magic stuff, I hate you," and all that unneccessary drama and turmoil most writers put in ensemble hero cast stuff. The problems that arise are more genuine and related to the task at hand and help to build the characters.
When people die. You feel it, the tension is at just the right point in the bad parts to not feel over done, every now and then something is thrown in to make you laugh or roll your eyes a bit. And most importantly when someone dies you actually are praying by some magical feet that can be cared. So I cared about them. Was emotionally invested in them. And naturally got pissed that all the villains didn't die in this book. So anger, happy, sad, confused, frustrated and rooting for all four heroes to make it out of this first book together, the author had me on all accounts.
The plot flowed swimmingly well. SO well i read this book in six hours or last and it's a standard length book. Couldn't put it down. The clues are laid out at just the right points. And, as fantasy goes, you're never quite sure the heroes will survive since fantasy writers are infamous for killing off the heroes. Lots of beautiful tension. The novel didn't drag. The excitement picked up at just the right points and the book tethered on the edge of moving to fast very delicately. You were always on that point of felling it needs to slow down a bit and then it would just long enough for your brain to digest the scene, be fed more plot information, and distractions from the big end reveal to never be to overwhelmed, yet never in the slow periods long enough to be bored.
And the ending. Maybe I'm just stupid, but even after the first reveal, i didn't quite get it until a few paragraphs later when it actually started happening. I was like. Oh this is very very clever. And I want to tell you but I can't. I really really hate stupid villains, but I can say in full confidence that these villains played a game and they played it well. Genius. Just the way I like them. Hopefully they continue to be worthy adversaries through the entire series.
And Romance. I wont' lie, I really really hope the guardians hook up with each other. The obvious romantic tension is so much fun and it's nice to see it not pay off entirely. But if and when it does, it be really annoying if all the typical romance clichés happened. I like the punchy very real type situations the book has versus the over dramatised situations authors tend to force on their unsuspecting characters. Should any blooming relationships be perfect oh hell no, but just not typical book fair. The rest of the stuff that bogs down these types of novels is missing, so why have typical romance? No so typical for the win. Yes I know this paragraph has nothing to do with how awesome I think this book is.
So good villains, good plot, good character developement, tragedy, triumph, disappointment, healing and self discovery. What could I possibly have bad to say. Okay I'll admit there were a few typos. I only noticed them cause they came up in moments that were chuckle worthy or I could say spell check so did that. Hence totally ignorable. However, my minor compulsive issues couldn't shake the inconsistent indents. Almost like space bar was used, and sometimes the author had ten spaces, sometimes five, sometimes seven, sometimes only one. Books are left aligned or justified so when my eye is zooming down the left side and all the indents aren't the same distance from the margin, my chakra gets thrown of balance a little bit. My chi misplaced, my... oh you get the point. Stupid I know. It probably wont bother anyone at all. I"m sure of it. But the same person in me that straightens wall clocks that get bumped a little of center was dying to set all the indents at the exact same spacing.
So my mild compulsive issues aside. Anyone who does not read this book, is in my opinion, a complete and total moron. Okay that's a bit extreme but this book is a sure page turner with the emotional ride, action, and character growth that any good book should have. I would read it again and will probably go to sleep trying to figure out which artifact will be in the next book. I'm hoping it's wind, but have a feeling it will be fire. But wind... it's so... cool. Pun intended. And this book, well it's cool too.
