I'm 50 years old.I read "Tom Sawyer" when I was a kid, "Huckleberry Finn" in high school, and several other Mark Twain books later on. ("A Connecticut Yankee", "The Prince and the Pauper", "Pudd'nhead Wilson")
I was *aware of* some of Twain's travel books like "Roughing It" and "Life on the Mississippi" and "Innocents Abroad" but have not read any of them yet.
I knew that "Tom Sawyer" was semi-autobiographical; that Samuel Clemens grew up in Hannibal, MO (although I thought he was born there too), etc. I even knew that Mark Twain had lost his shirt on a typesetting machine investment.
BUT ... I did *not* have a good feel for Sam's / Mark's overall life and how the pieces I knew about tied together. Just about any Mark Twain biography could have filled in most of those gaps I suppose, but it was pretty cool that this one was written by someone who actually lived with Mark Twain in his later life, and was able to glean insights from several people who had known Twain throughout his life ... while they were still alive.
This book has whetted my appetite for Albert Bigelow Paine's full-length biography of Mark Twain (in 3 volumes, with 2 parts each!) and for some of Twain's "travel books".
I think Paine did a good job with this "biography for boys". I'm not sure that a 4th or 5th grader would "get" everything in it, but the book is certainly within the grasp of the 13-and-up crowd. And as a previous reviewer pointed out, it can be enjoyed by girls, too. :^)

The Boys' Life of Mark Twain Albert Bigelow Paine 9781523789870 Books Reviews
good book, said the old lady, she reads them, so I guess they must be very interesting books to read
We take the classical approach to education. I wasn't sure whether my daughter would like this book, but after reading Tom Sawyer, she was determined to read it. She says 5 stars all the way.
Good Product.
When i wanted to read to my kids on the new ipad I selected a few downloadable classics and there is nothing quite like Mark Twain.
If you haven't read this for awhile and even more important, if you haven't shared this with your kids this is such a great opportunity for FREE to share this lifetime experience.
