I wasn't surprised to find this was a story about the English Civil War of the 17th century. This is the war that brought Cromwell to power and ended (briefly) the English Monarchy.As an American, who has little knowledge of that part of English history, this was an interesting look at a portion of that time and space. I probably learned about that time than I ever knew.
Given the time that book was written and it was well written and an easy read.

This is about the civil war of England not the American one (just in case you were thinking it's about the American civil war) I thought it was a pretty good story considering I didn't know there was a civil war in England.
As usual G. A. Henty writes a good tale. He is an excellent story teller. He has an excellent knack of writing about young men placed in various eras of history, making them fit in the era with speech, historical scenes, and mannerisms. His stories usually end on a positive note and have good moral values displayed through out. They are good stories for young men and adults as well.
Like all his books, this takes you there. The details bring the period to life and gives one the feeling of experiencing the events and the nature of the combatants.
This story is a good story about friendship and love that stays Strong though the years , even when beliefs are different . it was boring in some parts , but I am glad that I finished it .
