A difficult book to rate because Kinsale is a great writer and tells a good story, but this one had issues I just couldn’t ignore. They might not bother every reader, however.Set in France and England in 1772, this is the story of S.T. Maitland, a dashing, articulate, highwayman once known as the Prince of Midnight, and Lady Leigh Strachan, the daughter of an English earl. Lady Leigh has been wronged and her family taken from her by a horrible villain. Now she seeks revenge.
Lady Leigh remembers S.T. from her girlhood and comes to France looking for him to ask him to train her to kill. (Apparently there was no one in England up to the job.) Deaf in one ear and suffering from vertigo, S.T. is in hiding in Provence. He lives alone with his pet wolf “Nemo” in a broken down castle. In England there is a bounty on his head.
The first time S.T. sees Leigh, he falls in love with her but she has no interest in love. She is on a mission. But she tells him he can have her body if it will get her what she wants.
Kinsale’s writing is brilliant, the scenes of S.T. training the gray horse magnificent, but about two-thirds of the way through the story, it takes a bizarre turn. The villain is now head of a strange religious cult that has taken over Leigh’s family estate. The machinations of all the goings on at that place and the fawning of the women over S.T. was tedious and put me off the story.
I have to agree with one reviewer who said until the Epilogue the heroine was truly annoying. She ranted at S.T. at every turn. And S.T. would go off like a wounded dog. I did quite like the wolf, Nemo, though. But the whole cult thing and the heroine had me skipping paragraphs, never a good sign. The end is a good one, so if you’re a fan of Kinsale, you may want to keep reading.

After years of reading the same stories with the same old hero, this anti hero was a refreshing change. Anything but tired, this story kept me guessing until the end. Though he his badly damaged, Leigh helps him heal and in turn, our highway an awakens a heart long thought to be dead. Romance at it's finest.
This is one of the best historical romances I've ever read! Unique and interesting characters, great storyline, wonderful book. I can't believe I didn't discover Laura Kinsale sooner! So glad I did.
But am conflicted on her heroine. In this story, the heroine turns oddly passive at the end, leaving a rather pedestrian conclusion to otherwise adventurous tale.
Could not put this book down. Love, intrigue, highwaymen, adventure, my love of animals. It's all here. Bravo. Read it and be awe inspired.
Doncha just love damaged heroes? Desperate heroines? Winning against all odds, with witty repartee? Kinsale takes this plot convention and, as Shakespeare did with the sonnet form, interweaves the structure with magical depth of character, setting, and complex action, employing her intricate command of language to create a place you will want to revisit often. Historically accurate, a layered tapestry, timeless as the Bayeux, that represents love, not as a fixed noun, but as an active verb, a struggle. I'm a fan, can you tell?
Laura Kinsale is one of my all time favorite romance authors. I read this book about 15 years ago, and decided to purchase it for my kindle and I was not disappointed to re-read it and be glued to my chair for 2 days. It seems most romances these days have witty repartee, with a silly, interchangeable story you don't care much about. Kinsale has always delivered a serious, unique story that grabs your heart. I highly recommended every one of her books. She writes circles around all the latest popular authors. I compare her to Joanna Bourne or Diana Gabaldon.
I have more than 6 of Laura Kinsale's romance novels. They are always interesting reads. This book is certainly interesting! The plot and the characters are kind of dark so the book is not typical, however, there is definitely a lot of romance going on. The heroine is romanced throughout the book, she just does not realized it most of the time. The hero of the story is kind and gentle and has incredible ability to get scared and abused horses to trust him. Since the heroine is traumatized and without trust, he has to work hard to gain hers also. This is a lovely story, with both the heroine and hero having lots of issues psychologically and physically, yet they have a love that you just know will last forever. I loved this book, and I love Laura Kinsale's stories. I highly recomment this one, but just remember it is not a "fluffy" romance, but it is very much a heartwarming love story with great sex on the side.
