This novel includes other odd and wacky characters including a pushy mom, a drinking dad, a selfish sister, a cubby friend, an faithful admirer, a weird neighbor and her suiter, a rich family, a dirty store owner, a wonderful old horse and his rooster friend, scary traveling poor, sheep, a mail boy, the fat minister, and more. This was a quick read and it was enjoyable. The book deserves an A+++++

Rosalie Ham has produced another entertaining novel set in an region of Australia that will be familiar by many.
Great read. Very funny author. Book was in great condition
This was a fun easy read about farming families near Melbourne at the turn of the century. Politics of the day and what it was like for young women in these remote areas. I like the style of writing as well
I wanted to read something from the author of "The Dressmaker" so I ordered this. I am not saying it isn't a good book, it just did not hold me like the mover "the Dressmaker" did. I didn't finish it.
So acutely Australian, this yarn had me totally engrossed from the beginning. My favourite character is definitely Spot, the horse. So many things in this book gave me satisfaction.
Rosalie Ham is an excellent writer, immersing the reader right into the landscape with people trying to secure their lives and property during drought. Set in rural Victoria, she tells of how family's expectations unsuccessfully squeeze the elder daughter into " doing what's expected" & therefore saving the family. An unwanted smitten suitor on one hand and a flicker of growing attraction for the new manager of an adjoining property on the other, threaded through with vivid descriptions of the people and their hopes and fears. Another excellent novel from Rosalie Ham.
After reading 'The dressmaker' i decided i needed to read more from this author, and this book did not disappoint, the characters are well developed and the scenes are reminicent of the local areas. There are times when the writing becomes a little forced, but these are few and far between.
I was in turns elated and crushed for our heroine, both hoping for the outcome and dreading it at the same time )
