What I expected and what I got, are two different things. I expected friends-to-lovers or unknown-roommates-to-lovers. Something. The writing is not too bad, but increasingly frustrating. The storyline is OK, BUT how it plays out is annoying. She has so many issues from a lifetime of not feeling seen and good enough. He is using it against her, being abusive and not giving one F about her limitations or wants. He is abusive to her both in how he speaks to her and sexually. She tries to stand up to him and he threatens her. The author tries for BDSM, but fails miserably. Sometimes authors can get away with jumping a little ahead and being in the characters heads and still make it sexy. This is not. This is just frustratingly awful, the way he just barrels ahead without any questions about her needs, limits, feelings, consent or anything else that would make it OK. It is not sexy, it is not BDSM, it's just abusive and I really hate him. He could have been a brooding alpha male. He's not. He is manipulative in the way that he takes away her choices, while giving her a bare minimum of pretend understanding. He doesn't seem to have a real understanding of feelings and respect. The author could have saved the story if our girl had left. If she had realised that this is not good enough and it ended with her loving herself more than needing reassurance from an abusive boyfriend. But sadly it's a so called HEA. Normally I like that, but this time it left a bitter taste.

Bender The Core Four Book 1 edition by Stacy Borel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Ok, brief synopsis Keegan is a college student who wants to get into a nursing program. She lives with her mother and 8 year old sister, Sarah. Her mom is gone all of the time (partying and dating) and therefore Keegan is forced to be the mom. Sarah loves Keegan and truly needs her but Keegan decides to move out so she can enjoy being a young college student. I understand, I get it. So she checks out an ad for a roommate and that is when we meet Camden and his brother, Dodger. Camden is abrasive and a little heartless in the beginning. He says some mean stuff to Keegan but she still decides to live with him.

He owns a gym people. Why does he need a roommate?? He has plenty of money. This was never explained.

There is some of that insta friendship going on between Camden's brother Dodger and Keegan. They just met and he is helping her with her confidence, telling her that she is beautiful and has a nice body. He even says things like, 'I love you girl'. But its just a friendship. He wants to train her at the gym and he just loves her sister, Sarah. I just found that insta connection to be kind of weird and unbelievable. They just met but I understand it was a set up to encourage a relationship between Camden and Keegan. Just too obvious and unnatural.

So Camden is pretty cold to Keegan and he is always staring at her which causes Keegan to feel confused. She is, of course, attracted to him because he is gorgeous. And we can already guess he is being a jerk because he likes her. Why, I have no idea. They barely talk and when they do there is all this tension and anger. But for absolutely no reason. They just met. They barely have any conversations. Unless you you consider when the author tells you about their conversations later in Keegan's internal dialogue. Oh and we get a ton of Keegan's internal dialogue. Big fat paragraphs of what she is thinking and feeling. An editor could have helped cut that down and make it easier to read. I was skimming a lot.

Keegan was very insecure and any time anyone said anything that could be taken as a comment about her weight, she just lost it. She even told Camden (after a week of living together) not to bring his skinny whores over any more. I mean really. I am kind of tall and I was offended. Everyone taller than her was an . But Keegan would always say mean things about tall skinny women. She would throw these huge fits and she hit everyone at least once. Camden was constantly having to pick her up or calm her down. I cringed when she yelled at him that she hated him. I mean really!! I just kept thinking that the author must find this behavior somewhat acceptable.

**Minor Spoiler**
Oh and Luke...dear lord. I actually enjoyed that the author brought in this character but she didn't flesh it out. Not to spoil anything but Luke is not the greatest guy. Don't worry though, Keegan hits him in the face pretty good. And what man says to a women he hurt (in front of her new man) "I was falling for you" I mean what man says that? I felt like the author's voice came through too much, with the exception of Camden for the most part, with the male voices sounding more like women. The dialogue for the men sounded like a woman speaking or what a women would want to hear. It just didn't work for me. All the men were so sensitive to Keegan's feeling and her weight issues. Just gag me. (I am not a skinny person by the way and I can relate and I still was sick of her insecurity and all the men trying to encourage her to like herself.)

I liked Camden's character. I liked that he was alpha and a bad ass. But Keegan sucked. She was too insecure and I found hearing about it very annoying and repetitive. I did not understand why Camden liked her. He looked at her and just knew. Sorry that doesn't work for me. I need something more. Keegan goes from wanting to avoid him to jumping into his arms. I felt cheated. This book could have been good. It was trying to be like Beautiful Disaster (which I love!!) but it failed.

There will be at least three more books centered around these brothers so the author spends a lot of time introducing them. Blah blah more skimming for me. I don't like when books set up other books. One story at a time people. I think the author has a lot of potential though. But I doubt I will continue.

One more thing- the sex scenes were really good and I liked the interaction between Camden and Keegan, when they interacted. The problem was there was no build up. It was insta love/connection. And there was too much drama for me. These characters (Keegan) acted more like they were in High School. I recommend Until November and The Neighbor from Hell books if you like these type of stories.
I can't believe that I have re read this book so many times and have yet to review it. Well...here goes. You may have realized that there are a decent amount of less....savory reviews. My suggestion? Don't read the reviews...read the book.

The characteristics that the reviews point out as a negative are in my mind the exact characteristics that make the book REAL. This is not fantasy people. I mean, have you ever met a confident (even alpha, if you will) 25 year old man that is resisting a relationship? Uh huh...Stacey Borel nailed it. And I remember being an overweight college student with no self esteem. Nailed that too. No relationship is perfect and you will encounter bumps long the way. Bender is a great example of how simple things in life never can be as simple as you think.

Buy it. Read it. Enjoy it. (And review it....sooner than I did)
